A topsy-turvy circus with a classical twist
In a Canberra performance earlier this year, a violin-playing White Rabbit gave the circus a gentle musical thread, linking its whirlwind acts. It’s a lovely idea: a small, steady tune to follow as Wonderland’s logic gives way to airborne bodies, elastic contortion and playful surprises.
Cirque Alice brings Lewis Carroll’s world to Sydney Lyric Theatre, with aerialists, contortionists, dancers and puppetry set to contemporary arrangements of familiar classical music. The Sydney listing promises a full ensemble of fantastical spectacle, but doesn’t confirm the Canberra production’s particular characters or staging. Expect a storybook adventure where the music offers a familiar foothold and the circus keeps shifting the ground beneath it.
